Antique 14K Gold & Mother of Pearl Complete Dress Set — Retailed by B. Altman & Co., Fifth Avenue, New York — Circa 1905–1925
A magnificent and complete antique gentleman's formal dress set in 14-karat gold and mother of pearl, presented in its original fitted box from one of the most celebrated luxury retailers in American history.
The Retailer — B. Altman & Co.: B. Altman & Company was New York City's most patrician and prestigious luxury department store, founded in 1865 and operating its landmark Fifth Avenue flagship from 1906 until 1989. Contemporaries described having the Altman name on your purchase as the equivalent of a hallmark on sterling silver. B. Altman occupied the same elite tier of American retail as Tiffany & Co., Lord & Taylor, and Saks Fifth Avenue — and was known for selling only the finest quality goods. A piece retailed by B. Altman is a guarantee of quality and provenance.
The Set: This magnificent 9-piece white tie dress set consists of a pair of double-sided cufflinks with large round mother of pearl faces and domed gold backs connected by elegant figure-8 gold chain links, plus seven studs in graduated sizes (four shirt studs and three vest/collar studs) — everything required for a complete formal white tie or black tie ensemble.
Each piece features a luminous round mother of pearl disc bezel-set in 14K yellow gold, framed by a finely hand-engraved white gold decorative border with a delicate scrolling shell motif. The two-tone yellow and white gold construction and the engraved border detail are signatures of the finest American jewelry work of the Edwardian and early Art Deco period.
Original Box: The set is presented in its original B. Altman & Co. Fifth Avenue, New York fitted presentation box — silver/grey embossed fabric exterior with satin lid lining and gold velvet fitted interior. The retailer's name is stamped in gold on the interior lid. This original box is increasingly rare and adds significantly to the collectibility of the set.
Condition: Good to very good vintage condition. Mother of pearl faces lustrous and intact. Engraved white gold borders crisp and detailed. Gold backs and posts show light age patina consistent with the piece's age. All 9 pieces present and accounted for. Original box complete with age wear consistent with its century of life.
