DESCRIPTION:
Rare 14K Two-Tone Rose & Yellow Gold Cigarette Box — Niderost & Taber, San Francisco, Circa 1930s–1950s
An extraordinary and historically significant piece of American luxury goldsmithing from one of San Francisco's most prestigious jewelry houses.
The Maker — Niderost & Taber: Niderost & Taber was a distinguished San Francisco fine jewelry firm founded in 1921 and operating through 1973, when it was acquired by Cresalia Jewelers. The firm produced and retailed some of the finest gold objects in California during the golden age of American luxury craftsmanship. Pieces bearing the Niderost & Taber name are increasingly sought by collectors of American estate jewelry and California Gold Rush-era luxury goods.
Special Provenance: The interior lid is engraved with the name "AGNES M. NIDEROST" — almost certainly a member of the founding Niderost family. This is a piece that was almost certainly made by the firm and retained by the founders themselves, making it a rare example of the maker's own personal collection. This provenance detail is exceptional and unique.
Design & Craftsmanship: The exterior surfaces feature a dramatic two-tone alternating stripe pattern — bold vertical bands of yellow gold engine-turned herringbone guilloché alternating with rose gold fine vertical reeded engraving. The contrast between textures and gold colors creates a luminous, graphic effect of the highest sophistication. The lid rim is finished with a precise milgrain beaded border. The sides carry a complementary wave/scallop guilloché pattern. Every surface of this box has been decorated with extraordinary attention to detail.
The interior lid is lined with a hand-hammered dimpled gold texture — a superb artisanal touch. The box body is deeper than a standard cigarette case, designed to hold a full pack of cigarettes standing upright.
Weight & Metal: At 115 grams of solid 14K gold, the intrinsic melt value exceeds $10,000 at current gold prices — yet the maker attribution and family provenance make this worth substantially more to the right collector.
